"Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself."
– George Bernard Shaw
I try to reinvent myself periodically. Many of us, in our careers and lives, are on a quest to find our mission, purpose, Ikigai, or whatever you might call it. This search is meaningful, but it also carries the risk of getting stuck in endless reflection, especially when the answer remains elusive despite hours of contemplation. Having a clear sense of purpose is great for an elevator pitch, and it does bring a sense of fulfillment and belonging. But something I’ve learned from my own experience is that purpose can be surprisingly fluid; it might even shift from one day to the next. Maybe not drastically, but it changes. And yes, there can be some frustration in not having the early clarity that people like Bill Gates or Mozart had. But there’s also a lot of fun in discovering your path along the way!
If you're like me, it may be more rewarding to try new things, gather insights from these experiences, and reflect on whether they align with who you want to be. It’s essential to be mindful of the fear that comes with change, to face it, and to keep evolving into the next version of yourself. Over time, you'll find that it all begins to make sense, even if it doesn’t at first glance.
For anyone out there navigating big changes, here are a few of my thoughts:
- Don’t worry—the future is brighter.
- If it doesn’t seem that way right now, it’s probably because there’s something you still need to learn. Once you do, the future will indeed look brighter.
- Prepare yourself intensely to become this new version of you. It will help you push through any fear of change. Read, experiment, train, exchange ideas, learn from others who’ve gone through similar transformations, meditate—choose the methods that resonate most with you.
- Have fun! As I’ve mentioned in previous articles, this journey will give you something memorable to share. If you plan to share your story, take notes on your journey.
- Just one rule: aim for a bolder version of yourself. If you set your sights lower than that, you’re missing the point.
